JOB DESCRIPTION

You will be part of a small team responsible for the design and specification of production equipment, ranging from small assemblies to entire production lines. Working closely with the customer, project team, electrical design, and build team, you will be responsible for taking an idea through concept, specification, design, and procurement, and delivering a working pack of instructions to the build team who will make your creation a reality. You will be expected to support the Engineering Manager and the team, as a technical lead, adding strength to the department’s engineering capability whilst also mentoring the other designers.

This role is best suited to a competent mechanical design engineer who enjoys problem solving, investigating, designing equipment to the very highest standards, and who also enjoys sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience. THE ROLE
  • To design mechanical plant and equipment from scratch, using 3D Autodesk Inventor software.
  • Take designs from concept to final design.
  • Create technical part and assembly drawings for manufacturer.
  • Design solutions to meet UKCA, CE, Machinery Directive and industrial standards.
  • Produce mechanical specifications.
  • Lead technical discussions and review work done by the team.
  • Work collaboratively with management on strategic projects and provide technical council to the other Mechanical Designers.
  • Design hydraulic and pneumatic systems and schematics.
  • Manage projects to meet delivery schedules and budget.
  • Liaise with customs to resolve technical issues, and customer liaison for design enquiries.
  • Project planning, costing and quoting to customers.
  • Demonstrate continual innovation of design.
  • Attend project meetings.
  • Support maintenance with technical information and documentation.
  • Support management with department improvements.
  • Support trainee staff and apprentices.
  • Actively participate in training and corporate events to further the department knowledge base.

 

THE CANDIDATE
Education and Qualification(s)
  • NVQ/HND/BTEC/Degree ad varied industrial experience and training.

 

Experience
  • A strong, robust engineering background with an exposure to a range of engineering projects, with machine design experience, practical engineering experience, and extensive in-depth knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • At least 5 years experience in an established Mechanical Design Engineering role.

  •  2D & 3D Cad packages – ideally AutoCAD & Autodesk Inventor.
  • Pneumatics and Hydraulics.
  • Geometric tolerances and drawing standards.
  • Drivetrain – Gears, belts, chains, ball screw, linear ways.
  • Bearings and material knowledge.
  • Able to draw, read, interpret, and critique complex engineering drawings, GA’s.
  • Robust knowledge of: milling, turning, drilling, grinding and fabrication manufacturing processes.
  • Project management and procurement skills to ensure equipment is built as intended.
  • Basic electrical understanding.
