Switching our fleet from diesel to HVO reduced our UK Group carbon emissions by 35%.

Samantha Peet, Sustainability Manager.

HadleyTRANSPORT have completed a phased trial using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in 21 of its trucks and saved 395 tCo2e. The success of the trial has resulted in a full switch to HVO for the entire fleet, with an anticipated annual reduction in emissions of 1014 tCo2e.

How did we run our HVO trial?

  • Benchmarking summary – Sep-23 to Nov-23

    – 100% Diesel
    – Emissions averaged 78 t Co2e per month
    – MPG typical of fleet in 2023

To give a fair comparison, September to November 2023 were used to benchmark a fleet capacity equivalent to the phase 2 & 3 trial periods.
The associated CO2 emissions were calculated using the DEFRA emission factors for biodiesel, actual mileage driven and the Miles Per Gallon (MPG) achieved and compared it to the comparable factors in phase 1 & 2.

  • 50/50 blend of HVO/Diesel summary – Mar-24 to May-24

    – 50/50 HVO/Diesel
    – Emissions averaged 46 t Co2e per month
    – MPG increased by over 4%

During this phase we experienced an average increase in MPG, partly associated to 50% of the fuel (HVO) running cleaner and improved maintenance and tyre pressure monitoring. The combined effect on reducing the amount of carbon per mile travelled by around 50%.

  • 100% HVO summary – Jun-24 to Aug-24

    – 100% HVO
    – Emissions averaged 1 tCo2e per month
    – MPG increase by further 10%

The final phase confirmed the CO2 benefits of HVO with the trial representing a saving of 395 tCO2e if the fleet had been running on 100% diesel throughout the months of March to August 2024, reducing CO2 by over 87%.
Based on the trial data, we anticipate Hadley Transport associated emissions will contribute a 35% reduction in Hadley Group UK emissions, with 1620 tCo2e attributed to electricity and gas to our facilities.

Hadley Group are on a journey to reduce their carbon footprint in all the manufacturing facilities globally, while ensuring change is sustainable long term and achieved primarily through operational improvements.
