More than a quarter of the 30 million tonnes of waste generated in the UK is sent to landfill each year. However, thanks largely to processes already in place at our sites, Hadley Group has become the first rollforming company in the UK to gain the Carbon Trust Standard for Zero Waste to Landfill.
This globally respected benchmark is one of the world's leading independent environmental certifications and is only awarded to organisations that take a 'best practice' approach to waste management. Offering an independent, third party validation of our achievements, it clearly demonstrates our commitment to improving environmental performance throughout our operations.
Management Systems Co-ordinator Michelle Owen-Williams, who has been managing the certification process, said: "The bar is set quite high for this standard and achieving full compliance is no easy task, which makes it even more rewarding to know that we were already doing most of the tasks required to meet the criteria. Thanks to our ISO14001 certification and obligation to follow Duty of Care legislation, we already closely monitor our contractors, with full audit trails on waste and quarterly checks to make sure we're on top of the latest environmental legislation.
"As our colleagues will surely know, we have segregation routes in place for our waste streams and have provided all the necessary training for employees to separate waste. This is why it's so important that we all keep putting the correct waste in the appropriate bins!
"Two Carbon Trust assessors recently visited our facilities on Gaitskell Way and Downing Street to find out a bit more about what we do and to check the waste streams and this was very successful - so a big thank you to everyone who took part.
"Since we already have most of the required systems in place, the rest of the process was mainly about number crunching the figures for each contractor's waste and analysing all the routes this takes - such as recycling and reuse - to prove that nothing is sent to landfill, with statements from each contractor attesting to this fact.
"Being awarded this certification is a huge achievement for the company and something we can be really proud of, however we couldn't have done any of it without the vigilance of staff and the effort everyone has put in to ensure the right waste goes in the right bin."
